Feb 27th 2005 - Born and Raised in Kauai. Met David at
Church. He served a full time mission in my home town area of Magrath
Alberta Canada. He knew so many people that I know. Very nice guy. Fun
to talk to.

served a full time mission in Carlsbad California and was companions
with a guy from my home town. Very friendly and fun to talk to.

Bill & Patsy
Feb 27th 2005 - These friendly hikers were from
Minnesota? (Can't Remember). He is a Doctor and Patsy was a retired

They were so fun to talk to. I would love to be their neighbors.

email me with info! You were so fun to talk to and most friendly.

Gudrun & Geppe
Feb 27th 2005 - We met this German couple walking back
from the Kokee lookout. Geppe is a Geologist and Gudrun a journalist.
They were so friendly and we spent 20 minutes talking as we walked back
to the parking lot together. Their English was very good. They had a
good sense of humor especially in a second language which is sometimes
difficult to catch the subtleties. I hope we keep in contact.

Wyl
Feb 26th 2005 - Wyl was one of those personalities that
you wonder why he doesn't have his own TV show or something. He was so
entertaining to talk to. Not a stretch to understand since he IS an
entertainer at one the the best Luau's in Kauai. He is part Black part
Hawaiian. He didn't start dancing until he was 19. He decided to do it
right and took lessons from a master hula teacher. He showed us a
picture of his little girl. He said life changed a lot when he became a
dad. He didn't want the babysitter to raise her and had to make some
life adjustments. Real nice guy that I hope keeps in touch.

Betty & Berdina
Feb 27th 2005 - It is good to go to
church while on vacation. Especially a mormon church as you meet a whole
bunch of people who know people you know. This one was special. My dad
was killed by a drunk driver when I was four. Betty knew my dad and knew
who I was before I told her. She said I looked like him. Wow. My dad
taught her in Seminary before he died. She is visiting her daughter
Berdina in Kauai. She knows my mom well and remembers when my dad died
and commented how sad it was for her. Meeting her in Kauai is really
something. She is from Alberta Canada. Now that's just plain cool.

Spencer
Feb 26th 2005 - Driving through this neighborhood was
probably the best part of the trip so far. Not only did we meet Spencer,
but his neighbor Phil and he were both the nicest guys we've met on the
Island. We stopped to get a picture of his Homer in his yard left over
from Christmas. He left it up because the kids liked it. He showed us
his brother's metal art (middle picture) and the lot next door that the
drummer form the band Chicago bought for $750k to put his two horses on.
No, Really! He then took us in back of his brother's house to see
a million dollar view. OK multi million. The falls to the right are on
private land and can only be seen from this very spot!

March 13, 2005
Greg and Noni, I took this pic in front of my mothers house with Bobby
P. and thought you might like to see it. Been raining the last couple of
days so had some time to mess with computer. Nice meeting you. Best
wishes PHIL
(See last
picture on Right above... actually it was behind the house, no?)
Thanks Phil! Bobby also took a picture of us. Love to see it. Greg
Feb 26th 2005 - While chatting with Spencer, all of the
sudden his neighbor across the street comes out offering us some bananas
from his tree (Left above) . We get chatting and end up in his backyard
with a view of the most spectacular falls I have seen! (2nd from L).
They are on private land, so this is one of the only views of it on the
island. WOW! Phil is actually a Republican. I think Phil, Noni & I made
it three in all of Hawaii. He let us pick some of the most incredible
mandarin oranges from his tree (2nd from R). He also is an antique car
buff. He showed us his Model A in his garage (Right Above). He and his
mother live with the most incredible view I have seen from ANY backyard
ANYWHERE. Period. What a nice guy. Really hospitable and must be a great
neighbor. I would love to live in this neighborhood. It reminded me of
"King of the Hill" with the neighborhood guys all out standing around
chatting with a beer. OK, I don't drink, but maybe a rootbeer! I
won't put out the for sale sign on my house anytime soon since the lot
next door to him is listed at 1.6 Million. Yes, just the dirt. And the
view. We spent about 45 minutes there and hated to leave. But we
are just tourists and had to return to reality. (Ouch!)

Bobby
March 13 2005 - Update: The picture on the
right was sent to us by Phil (see above). It is of the great falls
behind us to the left. We are posing with Bobby. Bobby took a picture he
was going to send also. Can't wait to see it.
Feb 26th 2005 - Another incredibly nice guy found
visiting in Spencer and Phil's neighborhood. He was retired and said he
had a great pension. I believe him as he apparently had some nice
property they could see over above the falls. He also visited with us
for quite some time and was the nicest guy you could ever meet. Another
reason I wanted to move in the neighborhood, even though he lived a ways
to the south. He has a sister that lives not far from us in Utah. He had
been to Utah but for some reason thought it was nicer to be in Kauai in
the winter. Come on Bobby, really? I guess 10 million tourist can
be wrong. We love it here too. Email an update |

John
Feb 26th 2005 - We met John outside a grocery
store. He was friendly enough and was driving a real nice truck. He said
I was one of the only humans ever allowed to take his picture. (Does
that mean aliens maybe? Hee hee). He works for a wealthy land developer
that purchases golf courses and resort properties. He said Kauai
reminded him of French Polynesia in the 60's... quiet and friendly. His
wife is native Hawaiian and is a "Kumu Hula" or a teacher of the art of
Hula and other traditional hawaiian values. He described her as "very
special." He is from Oahu and said that he will retire in Kauai. Loves
it. We do too. Don't know about the retiring part yet. Will work on it!

Dan & Kanoe & boys
Feb 26th 2005 - I finally met a guy that helped cause me
major PAIN over the years. Dan was awarded the team MVP for the Hawaii
Warriors football team that POUNDED my BYU cougars back in the Ty Detmer
Days. I remember that game well. OUCH! In fact Hawaii has beat up my
Cougars on multiple occasions. It was really fun meeting his family on
the beach in Kauai. They were collecting Kauai sunrise or sunset shells
or something like that. Rare ones. Dan is now an educator as is
his wife, Kanoe. They have two cute boys, Kilikai & Kaikea. Dan
wants to coach football. Judging on his success in the past I think he
would do a great job. Good luck! They were a "picture perfect"
Hawaiian family.

struggles to get children the health care they need in the communities.
Real nice people. Would love to live next door to them.

Noni with Minda
Feb 26th 2005 - Noni loves papaya. She can spot them from
miles away. We saw these huge papaya from the road. Minda was in her
yard, so Noni approached her to see if she could buy one. Minda
explained that those papaya were actually for cooking, not eating like
the other kind. She took a long time showing us her garden and around
her property. She is from the Phillipines as is her husband who built
their very unique house by himself. The have lived in Kauai for 30 years
or so. She works in a very nice hotel restaurant on the north shore.

ready to be dazzled by the sunset. The sunset was great, but not
incredible as some. But in Kauai even a bad sunset is spectacular!

(Boy do I need a flash on my camera phone!)
Feb 25th 2005 - I know it was dark. Darson is really one
of those "angels" that goes around answering peoples prayers. No,
really! We got up to Waimea Canyon just before dark and had just made it
down the canyon and past Waimea when our car sputtered and the check
engine light came on. I turned to Noni and asked her to say a prayer. I
quickly pulled over and we waited a few minutes to see if anyone would
pull over with a cell phone. I had about given up and started to walk to
see if I could find help when all of the sudden Darson shows up in his
truck to see if he could help. Not only did he have a cell phone, but he
just happened to work for the car rental companies
coordinating the fixing of rental cars. He is also a mortician. Busy guy. We
were glad to draw on his car abilities and not his mortician skills that
night! Just over an hour later Joe showed up with a his tow truck
and a replacement Mustang
Convertible. Another angel to the rescue. I know these are simple
things, but we were tired, it was late and we were on a busy road and
needed help. Cars were rushing by, but Darson was literally our answer to prayer that night!
Both Darson and Joe have little girls. They both were born and raised in
Kauai. Darson moved to Florida, but returned. Joe also works in a Harley
shop. When these guys have time to sleep, I don't know. I am just glad they
were there when we needed them most. Thanks guys!

Roxanne & Toby
Feb 24th 2005 - These two were on the same beach as Nao &
Mayumi. They were eating a nice dinner they had cooked. Roxanne is from
California, and Toby is from Alaska. Roxanne described her situation as
being on an "extended world tour." Wouldn't that be nice!
Apparently not only the whales come from Alaska this time of year. So
does Toby! He said he has to return before the whales do. I guess he has
to be back to work in a couple of weeks. The whales have considerably
longer and don't take planes home.

Christine
Feb 24th 2005 - We met Christine in the "Business

to get a place that did color copies. Christine had a very pleasant
English accent. She and her husband moved from California 2 years ago
because she was involved with the "followers of Abidam" a spiritual
leader that has a sanctuary by the Hindu Temple up Loop road. She said
the movement startedin Fiji, and has apx 40 followers here. She said
they have a bookstore, but you can't visit the sanctuary. She gave us a
nice pamphlet on the movement and her devotion. It must work... it must
work for her... doesn't she have a happy smile?

Feb 24th 2005 - These two guys were at Wailua Falls when
we started visiting with the usual "where are you from"
questions. They are here on business with the Department of Defense.
They both have families back in Oklahoma. Didn't have long to
chat, but they were both pleasant. Who wouldn't be when they get to
leave Oklahoma in the winter and your work sends you to Kauai for 10
days. Try to tough it out guys. My heart goes out to you. I will think
of you while I sell Insurance in the snow in Utah in a few days!

Brandon
Feb 23rd 2005 - Brandon works as a bellman at the Hotel
we stayed at and has been there since 1993. He is married and was born &
raised in Lihue. He likes to fish on the beach in Anahola. He said that
many of the places he used to fish are now privately owned and are
harder to get to now. Tourism has it's pros and cons I guess. When the
plantations shut down the cane area is now private property. Even though
beaches can't be privately owned, access to those beaches is getting
more difficult. He also recommends Duane's Ono Char Burger in Anahola.
He comes from a family of 6 kids all living here in Kauai. He is very
family oriented and like to take his nephew to practice baseball and
other sports. He said he has never seen snow. Go figure.

Bryan
Feb 23rd 2005 - Works as a bellman with the other two
guys on this page. Bryan is 25 & single. He was one of the fastest guys
I have seen getting a car from the valet parking... he sprinted!
He was a fun guy to talk to. We chatted about various island activities.
I told him I liked to snorkel even though it was rough water outside the
hotel. He said that he had observed tiger sharks 50 yds out in the water
off this beach... made me think twice since there was very little to see
there anyway! He was born and raised here in Kauai and has
traveled to California, Nevada and that area. He had a fun Hawaiian
accent, as do most. He joked that he was trying to learn to speak
correctly instead of "pigeon." (native hawaiian slang, a sort of
island ebonics). My advice? Don't change a thing. I like meeting nice
people like Bryan.

Feb 25th 2005 - 20 years old. He calls himself a "Hawaiian
African-American" Also works as a bellman at the hotel we stayed at.
Born in California but raised here as a newborn. Dad from Kauai, mom
from Newport Louisiana. Dad met mom in Germany as they were both in the
military. Has a brother and two sisters. Has worked at the hotel for 2
months. Says he likes this much better than his last job. His hobbies
are hanging with friends at Wailua beach. Has a brother and two sisters.
He is the oldest. He likes bowling. Has not been off the island
since he was 6 months old. He likes Kauai because it is not a city like
Honolulu. You can't get lost as there is only one road... hiking the
mountains is a different story. His Dad is now a store manager, and his mother an office manager. His
brother plays high school tennis, his sister is a basketball mvp. Nice

Westin
Feb 25th 2005 - We met in a K-Mart checkout line.
Westin noted that we looked like we were visiting the Island and asked
from where. He is from Montana and has lived in Kauai for 5 years. He
does home based computer repair and attends community college. He said
that the average non-native transplant resident of Kauai usually only
last 4-5 years on the Island before returning to the main-land. He said
he will miss much when he goes to Ohio to school, but The drivers
on the island will note be missed. He claimed the locals are even worse
drivers than the tourists! Great guy to talk to . I wish we had more
time to visit, but a checkout line is a checkout line.

Feb 24th 2005 - Pretty girl, pretty name. It is hard to
know if people in retail stores are being polite because it is their
job, or polite because they like people in general. Have you ever
noticed some people talk to other workers as if you aren't there?
Whatever the case, Juvelyn wasn't like that. She took the time to chat
and ask about where we were from, etc. Juvelyn is expecting her first
child - a boy - in April. She said everyone that comes through the
checkout line tells her she looks ready to deliver now! Probably
not very fun having everyone comment on the size of your stomach all

sister's house. They help Ambria's sister watching her kids.
Apparently these two make that trip often. They said they have met lots
of
tourists along the way. Megan thought the convertible was cool! (Me
too, Megan... I drive an old 1996 Mazda Protoge at home in Utah) Ambria moved with Megan from California to Kauai 5 years ago. They like it in Kauai, but find
everything very expensive. Especially housing. They were nice enough to

cute kids Audi & Iden riding "shotgun" in his cool red truck. He is a

well by her dad, Lucky. I think she is lucky too! We were
all lucky, because we were eating at "No. 1"! I have always
wondered where Hawaiians go on vacation when they already live in
paradise! I noticed Lucky because he had a shirt with a Canadian Logo on
it. Being born and raised in Canada myself I had to ask him about it. He
and his family visited Vancouver in 2001. I asked him how it was. He
said "sort of cold for a Hawaiian boy." No, Lucky... it is kind of cold
for ANYONE! Nice place to visit, but 5 million people a year can't

Debbie - Budget Rent-a-car in Kauai
Feb 23rd 2005 - It is always nice when you make a
reservation and the customer service person doesn't look up at you with
a blank stare "Sorry, we can't find you in the computer... we have a
tractor left you may like..." Well fortunately Debbie was a 20
year veteran who not only found us immediately but had the brightest
smile. When we told her it was our 20th anniversary so she upgraded us
to a convertible for only $10 more/day. Not only that but she went back
got a new one for us. It did have 12 miles on it, but we didn't complain
(hee hee). WOW (yes, it really is our 20th anniversary this year.
Don't try this line on Debbie just for the upgrade. She wasn't just
sleeping for the last 20 years! She has four of children who all live
in Kauai. Two of them work in the airline industry. Aloha airlines I
believe. They are worried about the possibility of Aloha going out of

live with and their children in Kauai. He is very good at what he does.
He took the time to chat with us and posed for a picture! We didn't ask
him much in the way of life history. We are getting better at fishing
out details from complete strangers. It is amazing how quickly you feel
comfortable with people after only a couple of minutes. You feel like
inviting them over for dinner, or something. Great people here in

Marjorie at Ave Maria Shrine
Feb 24th 2005 - Now here is a jewel of a lady. I felt
like she was my grandmother. We met Marjorie at the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church in Lihue. They were having a meeting to
welcome in a new convert. We happened by and aske her what the "A M" on
the gate behind her meant. She wasn't sure as she was from another
Catholic church "St. Rafield" or something like that on the south side
of the island. We found out inside the church from a member of the small
band there that it meant "Ave Maria." Marjorie is a third generation
Kauaian with Portugese and Polish ancestors that came to Kauai. She said
she comes and lights a candle for her daughter and son
each week to keep them safe. Her son is serving in Iraq for the second
time. I love meeting people like Marjorie. You
want to take her home and have her as an extra grandma.

Nick (first 3 pictures) - Nick, Missy & Frank (Far Right)
Feb 24th 2005 - Watch out for these guys. You will
see them in fortune 500 fastest rising entrepenuers or something like
that. Nick bought this donut shop that is now called "Big Wheels Donuts
and Coffee House" in Lihue. He was busy at work around 7pm when we
stumbled by and saw a light. The first two pictures on the left were through a
screen window while we were talking to Nick (thus the lines). Nick was
starting these donuts then at 6pm or so and works until
4am when he would have the donuts ready for 7-11 and other places.
The couple that owned the shop before him retired to Arizona. Apparently
they needed the dry heat of Arizona for medical reasons. We found out
that Nick and Frank are members of our church! Missy is Tongan and had a
Tongan friend that
went to Utah for a funeral? Or lived there? or something like that.
Apparently there are 6+ LDS (Mormon) congregations on the Island. Nick
said he doesn't make it to services as you can imagine working to 4am.
His parents are active LDS members. They were so fun to talk to and had
GREAT smiles, as you can see. I wonder if Nick still smiles like
that at 4am. I don't know if I will be awake to see! Check out
their donut place in the morning from 5am to noon? Not sure of the exact
times, but in the mornings. It smelled wonderful.

Mar 12th 2005 -
just got on your website to look for our picture. You have a neat
site with all of the pictures. I plan to read all about your trip
tomorrow when I have more time. Pat was the one who was on her first
trip to Hawaii. We all had a great time. I was not really ready to

attending the Superpops series at the Omaha Symphony tonight. We
usually see each (other) once or twice a week. We love doing
breakfast or lunch or most anything else. Thanks for sharing your

Feb 23rd 2005 - Really nice ladies we met in line
waiting to get on the flight from Honolulu to Kauai. It was the first
time on the island for one of them (Diane?) and they looked like they
were having so much fun. We somehow got talking about College Football.
We both had teams that were stumbling as of late (Cornhuskers and BYU
Cougars). They joked about their coach that went 8-3 so they had to fire
him to replace him with a coach that went 5-4.We were lucky enough to
see them a second time at the Opaekaa Falls area for just a second. Small
