Elder Spencer Davies - Letter Highlights |
||
| Dear Family:
(Dad's editorial input - Also see Comments below from James
Spencer, Greg's cousin who served in Taiwan) (Spencer called us on the phone for Christmas. He only had 45 minutes. He timed it to the second and had to hang up. Rules are rules! ) Right now I'm in this computer place where basically people only play games like Star Craft and these other games which I haven't seen before and the volume is up really high, a machine gun sound, and some yelling. This place is pretty intense. Gentry this is my address: The city is xin(1)dian(3) city. Look at min(2)quan(2) lu(4) lu means street in mandarin. The only thing that you might have a problem with is that the character romanizations are different. It might be the old pinyin that the Google thing is looking at. min(2) quan(2) lu(4) is the road that our church is on. (Gentry wanted to look up where Spencer is on "Google Earth", where you see satellite views of places) Anyways, my other letter doesn't exist in the sent items. I don't know exactly what happened. (He told us he emailed us last week, but we never got his email. He tried to salvage a copy of it, but no luck.) Right now we have 2 people in the bap pool (Baptismal pool or investigators?) One of them is Liu Dixiong and also Bao Dixiong (Names of the investigators?). One of the cool guys in our Ward gave us a referral and he is visiting with that investigator when we go and teach him, I think, every time that we go and see him. Liu Dixiong is really cool, he drives very far to come and see us. His house is closer to the temple church and the bu (thats the mission office). But he is still in our area, and he's good about coming to the right Ward. We went over the baptismal interview questions so he knows what the Bishop is going to ask him when he does go and see him. We have a baptismal date set for him. He is such a cool guy, even though I don't understand what he says all the time. Like everybody else, he is so cool. Anyways, we had a Christmas celebration on the 26th. They had a talent show. Some of the missionaries helped the Mission President's son with his Eagle project. He painted this wall at the English school in Tiabei. (I am not sure, but I think that is Taipei... I guess you say it Taibei?) I think I can't focus on more than one thing for more than two seconds without switching the subject. (Don't worry, that is why I am here... hee hee.) After reading Grandma and Grandpas letter from Siberia (They are on a mission there... you can click the link to see their letter) I think that is mostly what I think of when I think of Russia: snow, trains and big wide open areas with mountains. A while ago my companion was contacting and talked to this guy and he (The missionary?) said in Chinese "..I'm a representative of this church", and he (the Chinese guy?) said in English "I don't believe you." Everybody speaks English. The bus drivers here wear Santa suits around this time. Its pretty cool. I want to send this now because my companion next to me is having trouble with his. (His email, I believe). Love you guys, bye. ___________________________ Email from James Spencer, Greg's Cousin who served in Taiwan. James is currently a Seminary Teacher in Raymond, Alberta, Canada: It is great to read Spencer’s
letters. I have spent time on Google Earth searching out my
old areas…it’s pretty fun. The city he is in is written as
Hsintian on Google earth. When you find
Taipei, you’ll
see Yongho to the east. South and a bit west is Chongho.
Hsintian is south and a bit east of Chongho. I could not
find min quan (pronounced “mean” “chwen”) street, though. I
have not had success typing in street names in Taiwan. I
have found the temple though. The coordinates for the
temple are 25 degrees 01’52.52” N, 121 degrees 31’40.33”
E. The big Zhang Kai Shek memorial is west a couple of
blocks from the temple. The grounds are absolutely huge.
There are two huge assembly halls on the same grounds at the
opposite end of the memorial. Ask Spencer to locate an
English map of his area…they will have the Romanized
characters that are standard for maps. Then you may be able
to find his street. You could always go to the land mark
game too. |
